Opposition MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai has appointed his longtime deputy Thokozani Khupe as acting president of the party as he recovers from a bout of illness. Tsvangirai had to be airlifted to South African after he started vomiting and got ill. However, his party downplayed his illness saying that he had gone for a routine checkup.
MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu confirmed Khupe’s appointment saying:
She’s the acting president. As you know… Khupe resides in Bulawayo but she frequently travels to and from Harare to conduct party and parliamentary business.
University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer Eldred Masunungure said:
It is likely to mellow in favour of the coalition because Khupe will realise that she has been recognised as the most senior of the vice presidents based on the reality that she is an elected official anyway so it makes good politics (sense) on the part of Tsvangirai.
Relations between Tsvangirai and Khupe have been over Tsvangirai’s decision to form the coalition MDC Alliance with former partners Tendai Biti, and Welshman Ncube among others. This move may help mend relations.
