US says it's monitoring  Pastor Evan Mawarire's trial, urges govt to end intimidation

The United States Embassy in Harare has called on the government to stop arbitrary arrests and intimidation saying that it is monitoring the trial of pro-democracy activist Pastor Evan Mawarire. The founder of #ThisFlag Movement is facing charges of misconduct and inciting a crowd to cause violence. The state alleges that Mawarire initiated University of Zimbabwe medical students to become violent when they were protesting against a hike in fees.

Statement from the U.S. Embassy on the Trial of Pastor Evan Mawarire

The United States is monitoring the trial of Pastor Evan Mawarire and calls for an end to arbitrary arrests and intimidation for political purposes.

We support freedom of expression and the right of peaceful assembly. We call on the Government of Zimbabwe to respect and to protect the human rights of all persons in Zimbabwe, consistent with international human rights norms.
