Alleged Cop Killer granted bail after 73 days in remand prison

High Court judge Justice Amy Tsanga on Tuesday granted Barnabas Mwanaka US$200 bail. Mwanaka had been in detention for more than two months after he was accused of the murder of a police office Tallkmore Phiri who died after skirmishes between vendors and police officers in June. Justice Tsanga ordered him to report to police three times a week among other stringent bail conditions.

The state alleges that ZRP officers claimed Mwanaka together with two other Harare residents Darlington Madzonga, a pro-democracy campaigner and Edmore Musvubhithat hit the now deceased Phiri with stones and “booted” feet, and the police officer had to be rescued by his workmates who rushed him to Morris Depot, where he was pronounced dead on arrival

Mwanaka was represented by Tonderai Bhatasara of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
