Mutare provincial magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe sentenced Fulton Dolobo (34), Malvin Mari (35), Emmanuel Mupona (34) and Brian Muchenje (35), all of Kambuzuma, Harare, to two years in prison for smuggling 416 bales of second-hand clothing. The bales were valued at $145 000. The quartet did not deny the charges and were convicted on their own pleas.
However, the Magistrate suspended all 12 months on condition that the four pay $1000 fine each. He also supended the remaining 12 months on condition of good behaviour for the nexty 12 months.
The 416 bales and 33 sacks of second-hand goods were forfeited to the State.
