The Older Persons Act which was initially crafted in 2002, and enacted in 2012 has now been brought into force by Statutory Instrument 100/2017. However, the law which became effective on the 1st of September 2017 is yet to be aligned to the new constitution. In the act, an older person is described as someone aged 65 and over.
The act seeks to:
- provide for the well-being of older persons
- provide for the appointment of a Director for Older Persons Affairs, the establishment of an Older Persons Board
- create an Older Persons Fund
- provide for matters connected therewith, or incidental thereto
Older persons are entitled to monthly stipends of $20 per month, including food handouts.
