MDC-T legislators challenge passage of Chief Justice Bill at Constitutional Court

Harare West MP Jessie Majome and Mutare West MP innocent Gonese have approached the Constitutional Court challenging how Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 1 was passed and seeking to have it set aside. The two claim that the bill was not passed by the required two-thirds majority which is necessary to make any amendments to the Constitution.

The bill if signed by President Robert Mugabe will give the president sole discretion in choosing the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as well as the Judge President of the High Court. The Bill was passed by a vote of 182 against 41 in the National Assembly. However, Majome contends that some of the people who are purported to have voted yes were not in Parliament on the day in question.
