Regis Mangwari was sentenced to 2 years in jail by Mvuma magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda, who convicted him on 31 counts of culpable homicide and negligent driving. He will however serve 12 months in jail after 12 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour. He also had his licence disc cancelled and was prohibited from driving for two years.
Mangwari’s South African registered haulage truck sideswiped a Johannesburg-bound Proliner bus, killing 31 people and leaving 40 others injured in Mvuma in April. He had initially pleaded not guilty to the culpable homicide charges, but later changed his plea after evidence obtained from the truck’s tracking system showed that the accident occurred when he attempted to overtake at a curve.
