Jimu Sigauke Bahari (29) of Chitungwiza appeared before magistrate Livingstone Chipadze facing charges of attempted murder after he knocked down a police officer, Theodora Chiparawasha(32) at a roadblock.
Bahari pleaded guilty to the charge but claimed to have been frustrated after being stopped at eight different roadblocks. Sigauke told the court
Your Worship I beg for leniency I was frustrated by close to 10 roadblocks which I came across. From Harare I was stopped eight times.
However, magistrate Chipadza did not entertain this and sentenced him to 36 months in prison for the attempted murder charge. In his ruling, Chipadze said:
If we allowed motorists to drive their cars towards police officers especially when they are frustrated, that will be disastrous.
Chiparawasha clung to the wipers as Bahari moved back and forth in an attempt to shake and throw her off the bonnet. He was arrested by other officers after about 600m.Chiparawasha lost her left shoe, a cap and traffic books. The incident happened at the 162km-peg Harare-Mutare road.
