Brain Nhkatazo Mathe (30) and his wife Lydia Mathe (22) pretended to be brother and sister in order to lure a Kuwadzana man to fall in love with Lydia. The victim, Nyakanyaka Msipani of Kuwadzana, fell in love with love with Lydia, who used the alias Stephenie Pullen. After falling in love with her, he paid $3 000 as lobola to Brain after the couple lied that they were orphans with no other relatives.
After paying lobola, Msipani was told that his wife would be escorted to him after two weeks. However, after the fortnight had passed he was informed that she had fallen sick. He sent his ATM card and pin to pay for her treatment. Brain and Lydia then changed sim cards and stopped communicating with Msipani. The couple was arrested after Msipani bumped into Mathe in the central business district.
The Mathes appeared before Harare Magistrate Victoria Mashamba facing charges of fraud. They were denied bail and remanded in custody.
