After her alleged assault on Gabriella Engels we have decided to compile a shortlist of the times Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabe has been accused of assaulting someone in a foreign country.
1. Singapore – July 2017
Grace was allegedly detained briefly in Singapore after attempting to destroy camera equipment belonging to two journalists. She had accompanied President Robert Mugabe to Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore where he was being treated for an undisclosed medical condition.
2. Hong Kong – January 2009
In 2009, British photographer Richard Jones accused Grace Mugabe of assaulting him outside a hotel in Hong Kong. According to Jones, her bodyguards chased him and attempted to take his camera. They then pinned his arms down while Grace punched him repeatedly in the face.
3. Malaysia – 2009
Grace was in VIP transit in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia when she walked from the international to domestic transit zone. Attempting to return to the correct area, she is reported to have been stopped by airport security whom indicated she was walking through a clearly-marked ‘exit only’ walkway. Grace, however, refused to go through another check-in process, ultimately assaulting airport staff.
