Harare-based businessman Mr Upenyu Mashangwa and his spouse, Blessing are suing United Family International Church leader Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa and his wife, Ruth for US$6,5 million over “fake prophecies, fraud and defamation”.
In their application filed at the High Court on Thursday, the couple allege that in 2012, Makandiwa misrepresented that they would encounter a “debt cancellation miracle” and encouraged them to continue giving him money (“seeding”). The couple’s house in Marlborough was later attached and sold for US$500 000 instead of US$700 000 which they are now demanding from Makandiwa. They also want Makandiwa to pay them US$1,7 million for recommending a de-registered lawyer Mr Tichaona Mawere whom he prophesied would never lose a case. They are demanding US$2 million compensation because their name was used to advance Prophet Makandiwa’s interests.
