Constitutional Amendment Bill now awaiting Mugabe’s assent after sailing through in Senate

Constitutional Amendment Bill (Number One) now awaits President Robert Mugabe’s assent after getting 53 affirmative votes from Zanu-PF senators and traditional leaders yesterday. 19 Senators from MDC-T voted against it.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill (Number One) if passed into law will give the President powers to appoint the Chief Justice, his deputy and High Court Judge President after consultation with the Judicial Service Commission. It will do away with public interviews by the Judicial Services Commission (JSC).
