Kariba immigration officer sentenced to 1 year in jail for taking bribe, freed on bail within hours

Mercy Chikandiwa who was stationed at Kariba border post was convicted following a full trial before magistrate Toendepi Zhou and was sentenced to 18 months in prison of which six were wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour for five years.

She was however released on $100 bail pending appeal after her lawyer Unite Saizi made an appeal against the judgement. The court heard that on 14 July this year, Chikandiwa demanded $70 from Ugandan national Linda Kusima so that she could facilitate her passage without any challenges.
