Auditor-General Mildred Chiri fired by President Mugabe

Yesterday Mike Ndudzo was appointed as the new Auditor-General to take over from Mildred Chiri. However, according to weekly publication, The Financial Gazette, Chiri was fired by President Mugabe as she still has more than two years before her contract expires. She was given a new six-year contract in 2013.  According to the new Constitution, a person can only serve as Auditor General for two terms of six years each and Chiri was appointed in 2013. Before that Chiri was served as Comptroller and Auditor-General after being appointed on  February 24, 2004

Chiri has routinely exposed graft, profligacy and mismanagement of resources in by public officials. Chiri was reportedly removed from office by Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa in terms of section 310 (2) of the Constitution.

Contacted for contact Chiri only said:

It is true. I have been notified of the decision. I had a meeting earlier in the day with Minister Chinamasa where he informed me of the President’s decision, which follows the expiry of my term of office

One of the last things I did before leaving government was to renew Chiri’s contract. She is entitled to the full term of her contract. It’s a political decision. Chiri has been causing pain in government
