Speaking to The Herald, Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed that one person was killed while three others were seriously injured on July 18 at around 3am, after security guards at the Government owned Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) Private Limited fired shots at illegal diamond panners who were armed wrenches and machetes.
Sources who spoke to The Herald said that the illegal panners allegedly cut the security fence around the Red Zone of Portal A diamond mining area and intended to break into the main diamond sorting room. Sources claim the security guards only shot at the panner after they resisted orders to leave.
Three of the panners were shot and injured and one of the injured who was shot on the right hip bleed a lot. The security guards used a company vehicle to take him to Mutare Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
