You can register by deposing an affidavit yourself: ZEC clarifies on proof of residence, says homeless can vote

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission(ZEC) has said that prospective voters can write their own affidavits which they can use as proof of residence when registering to vote for next year’s harmonised elections. However, people need to take note that the government recently gazetted a new law on Friday last week, which carries a sentence of up to a year in prison for anyone who lies on the affidavits.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Women’s Affairs last week, ZEC Chairperson Rita Makarau said:

This is the contentious issue. You will need proof of identity or citizenship; you will also need proof of where you reside.

We have been asked – but many women do not have this. The lease agreement, title deeds, rent card is in the husband’s name, so how do I prove my residence as a woman

Well, you can if you want to, by getting a letter from your husband confirming that you reside with him at that address.

Makarau also said that the homeless are also free to vote and write an affidavit saying they don’t have a home.
