A new law which was gazetted by the government on Friday says that all people who provide false information to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) when providing proof of residence will face up to a year in jail. ZEC has said that people will be required provide proof of residence when registering to vote for next year’s harmonised elections. The requirement has been roundly criticised by civic society groups and legal experts who believe that the requirement will result in people failing to participate in next year’s harmonised elections.
Part of the new regulations read:
Any person who makes a false statement in a residence affidavit shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level ten or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding level 10 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding a year or to both.
