Harare businessman, Philip Chiyangwa has demanded defamation damages of $2,5 million from NewsDay and journalist Paidamoyo Muzulu over an article which stated that he sold land he did not own to NSSA.
Through his lawyer Itayi Ndudzo of Clairwood Chambers, Chiyangwa said Muzulu defamed him in the article titled “Chiyangwa sold land he didn’t own”. Part of the letter reads:
Our client’s position is that the title and the entire contents of your article were patently defamatory and injurious to the name and standing of our client. The article created an impression to reasonable readers that our client wrongfully and unlawfully sold land exclusively belonging to Chegutu Municipality to the National Social Security Authority (NSSA).
Meanwhile documents showing that Chegutu Town Council approved Gabroc Enterprises’ request for land in 2001 are in The Herald’s possession. According to The Herald, Gabroc Enterprises paid ZW$1 052 000 cash on October 29, 2001 and Chiyangwa made a subsequent payment of ZW$9 468 000 for Hintonville Extension on February 20, 2003.
