ZRP warns people to stop posting videos showing officers misbehaving, says they are "stage managed " and threatens arrest

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released a full page statement in state owned newspaper Herald, warning users of social media to stop sharing or posting videos of police officers misbehaving. The ZRP alleges that most of the videos are “stage managed” and have been investigated and found to be false. The ZRP goes on to threaten social media users with arrest for “undermining public confidence in a law enforcement agency.

Part of the statement in the Herald reads:

Just like the fabricated figures which came out in the Herald, the ZRP is also aware of some of the stage managed videos being posted on the social media depicting police officers misbehaving/ engaging in various corrupt activities and unprofessional conduct. We have investigated some of the cases and found them to be false and they are just meant to denigrate the Police.

Equally we wish to applaud those members of the public and media alike who bring forward credible information that we have used to investigate cases of corruption and other criminal offences.

We must remind and warn members of the public that publishing or communicating false information is a criminal offence under section 31 (a) (iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification) and Reform Act; Chapter 9:23, Any person who, whether inside or outside Zimbabwe—(a) publishes or communicates to any other person a statement which is wholly or materially false with the intention or realising that there is a real risk or possibility of—(iii) “undermining public confidence in a law enforcement agency, the Prison Service or the Defence Forces of Zimbabwe” shall be guilty of publishing or communicating a false statement prejudicial to the State and liable to a fine up to or exceeding level fourteen or imprisonment for a period not exceeding twenty years or both.

The Bible is also precise when it says in Proverbs 12 verse 22 ” Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight:

In future if people are arrested for misinforming the public they must not cry foul. Bear in mind that it is not only undermining the Police but it also tarnishes the good standing of our country.
