Sunday Mail apologises to Ray Kaukonde for sex scandal articles

The Sunday Mail has apologised to former Zanu-PF Mashonaland East provincial chair Ray Kaukonde for an article published on November 2, 2015, and also in the issue of its sister newspaper The Sunday News of the same day. The articles were under the titles “Ray Kaukonde in sex-for-power storm” and “Kaukonde in sex scandal”.

The Sunday Mail states that the allegations that Kaukonde was demanding sex from unmarried and married women in exchange of political positions were untrue in light of the new evidence that they have. Part of the apology reads:

It has come to our attention that the allegations appearing in the articles referred to above were completely and utterly untrue and were based on sources of information that have been established to have no credibility at all. Consequently, therefore, we hereby retract in their entirety the allegations in the articles and wish to apologise unreservedly to Mr Ray Joseph Kaukonde and his family for the damage done to his good name and reputation, and embarrassment and anguish caused by the publication.

Sunday Mail’s apology comes after Kaukonde sued  Zimpapers for $5 million over the articles. Lawyers representing Ray Kaukonde and Zimbabwe Newspapers (Zimpapers) had agreed on July 5 and 7 as trial dates.
