Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said that people can use affidavits as their proof of residence to register for next year’s harmonised elections. This comes after Zec had been accused by critics of trying to disenfranchise voters by requiring proof of residence documents which may be hard to get for lodgers. However, Zec Commissioner N. Mushonga said Zec officers will act as commissioners of oath meaning that a person would be able to walk in with just their national identity document and sign the affidavit forms without any extra documents or witnesses needed.
However, the issue of whether affidavits will be available for free has not been clarified.
