Suspected killer freed for 2001 murder after all witnesses die before trial commences

Zhuwao Dabson was granted freedom on Tuesday after sixteen years on remand over allegations of murdering Dumisani Zondiwa in 2001 at the height of farm occupations. Dabson had to be released after all the witnesses to the crime died in the last 16 years before the matter was tried. Zondiwa died after being assaulted by alleged Zanu-PF supporters for supposedly failing to attend the meeting that had been organised by war veterans. Two of the suspects, Tapiwa Chimbandi and Samuel Sibiwa went on the run immediately after and remain at large. Another suspect, Cephas Matare has sinced passed away. Dabson was the last suspect.

The reasons for the long delay before the case was tried are yet to be divulged.
