Fuel scam smashed as Zimra intercepts two tankers carrying over 40 000 litres of petrol declared as Jet A1 fuel

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) prevented a potential fuel scam after it intercepted two tankers carrying over 40 000 litres of petrol that had entered Beitbridge Border Post without paying duty after the petrol had been declared as Jet A1 fuel destined for Joshua Mqabuko International Airport.

Petrol attracts $0,45 per litre in excise duty, while Jet A1 is duty free. A source who spoke to The Chronicle said that no arrests have been made yet. He said that the petrol was meant to be delivered to Kaladan Investments of Bulawayo. When contacted for comment by The Chronicle Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele referred all questions to customs and excise authorities while Zimra’s acting board secretary, corporate and communications Ms Ropafadzai Majaja was unable to provide confirmation of the incident but explained the screening process.
