Man appears in court for whipping maid’s four-year-old son to death for soiling himself

Terrence Chipungu (28) of Mbare appeared before regional magistrate Lucy Mungwari facing charges of culpable homicide after he allegedly whipped his maid’s four-year-old son to death. The child had soiled his pants while he was being fed by Chipungu’s wife which enraged him, prompting him to assault the child.

Chipungu pleaded not guilty although he did not deny whipping the child. He argued that the child died as a result of a fall sustained just after the beating. The deceased’s mother, Sandra Chazika, supported Chipungu’s assertion that the child died as a result of a fall, although she told the court that she did not witness her child falling.

The post-mortem established that the cause of death was marked brain oedema, head trauma and assault.
