Onbeat Mapfumo (39), founder of Grace Ministries in Highfields, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for raping two of his congregants. He was arrested after he had appeared on Tilda Moyo’s show on StarFM. Harare Magistrate Hosiah Mujaya sentenced Mapfumo to 14 years on each count of rape, to make it 28 years in jail. However, he suspended 6 years on condition of good behaviour to leave an effective sentence of 22 years in prison.
In passing sentence, Mujaya ruled that Mapfumo’s moral blameworthiness was high saying:
You have managed to heal the second complainant who was HIV positive such that when she was re-tested she became negative.
This convinced the unsuspecting congregants that you were a true man of God due to these intense powers you were showing. One is bound to believe in your every word after witnessing these miracles.
