Soneni Sibanda (35) from Kezi in Matabeleland South province appeared before magistrate Jimmy Ntonga facing infanticide charges after she allegedly killed her newly-born babygirl by shoving her into an anthill hole.
She was remanded in custody to today while waiting for a post-mortem report. The court heard that Sibanda gave birth at Tshelanyemba Hospital in Kezi on May 11 this year and killed the baby on her way home four days later. When she arrived home, Sibanda lied that she had had a miscarriage. However, police recovered the infant’s decomposed body following a tip off leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
In her defence Sibanda said that she killed the baby because she felt she could not manage to take care of the baby as she could not locate the baby’s father and was still nursing another child and also has four other children to look after.
