Govt twists UN's statement that it cannot help Zim remove sanctions, says it proves sanctions are illegal

Government has twisted the statement by United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli and said that the statement shows the Western imposed sanctions are illegal according to international law.

Mr Parajuli said that the UN cannot help Zimbabwe remove the sanctions because they are not UN sanctions and urged Zimbabwe to open dialogue with the nations that have imposed the restrictive measures. However Secretary for Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Mr George Charamba said that statement by UN’s resident coordinator proves Zanu-PF’s stance that the sanctions are illegal. Said Charamba:

The UN representative is distancing the UN and therefore distance international law from sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West. What the UN Representative has done for the first time is to distance the raft of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the EU and by America from international law, international institutions and international precedence. What it means in simple terms is that the sanctions are not only arbitrary and illegal; they are lawless when read against the precepts of international law.
