The Prosecutor General (PG)’s office yesterday applied to have the matter where William Mutumanje popularly known as Acie Lumumba is accused of insulting President Robert Mugabe postponed to July 18 for a possible trial date instead of withdrawing the charges.
Last month, Lumumba withdrew his constitutional challenge with after prosecutor Edmore Nyazamba had promised not to pursue criminal charges against him. The postponement was opposed by Mutumanje’s lawyer, David Hofisi who accused the State of being treacherous and insincere. Hofisi also promised to take action against the prosecution and said he would seek reinstatement of the ConCourt challenge.
However, prosecutor Vernancia Mutake insisted the National Prosecuting Authority did not communicate the terms of agreement made by Nyazamba at the ConCourt. The matter was remanded to today after Magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta ordered the State to verify Hofisi’s claim pertaining to the promise by the State.
