Ray Kaukonde’s $5 million defamation lawsuit against Zimpapers gets new trial date(s)

Lawyers representing Ray Kaukonde and Zimbabwe Newspapers (Zimpapers) agreed on July 5 and 7 as trial dates in a lawsuit where former Zanu PF Mashonaland East provincial chairperson is suing Zimpapers for $5 million over articles published in The Sunday Mail and Sunday News newspapers in November 2014 under the titles: Ray Kaukonde in sex-for-power storm and Kaukonde in sex scandal. Zimpapers journalists Tumeliso Makhurane and Mabasa Sasa are cited as second and third respondents.

The trial was supposed to have started yesterday, but Zimpapers lawyer Advocate Fadzai Mahere submitted that the parties had agreed on the postponement of the matter. Kaukonde is being represented by Advocate Thabani Mpofu, who is instructed by Mordecai Mahlangu. Kaukonde argues that the articles portrayed him as immoral, depraved and unfit to hold responsible office. However, in the defence the journalists argue that they published the articles in fulfillment of their duty to inform the public.
