Harare is too broke to collect refuse yet $2million spent on football team: Mayor Manyenyeni

Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni has lamented the fact that the city council is unable to collect revenue because it is broke. The mayor blamed poor resource allocation for the situation, saying that at least $2 million was being used to run the Harare City Council Football Club and basketball team. This money could have been channelled towards service delivery. The mayor quit as the patron of patron of council’s premiership football team, citing “abuse of ratepayers’ money”  by the club early this year.

Speaking on social media last week, Manyenyeni said:

We have no money to buy diesel to collect refuse around the city, some areas have gone for weeks,

The annual budget for the team can buy 20 garbage trucks with a life spun of 7 years

…The City’s basketball team is off to Swaziland next few days for a Tournament. For the trip to be successful it (the team) needs more than $80,000.
