The Prosecutor General (PG) ‘s Office yesterday withdrew criminal charges against NewsDay Deputy Editor Nqaba Matshazi and senior reporter, Xolisani Ncube after 18 months.
Matshazi and Ncube, together with Alpha Media Holdings representative, Sifikile Thabete, were being charged for contravening section 31(1)(ii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly publishing a story that Central Intelligence Organisation officers were paid their December 2015 salaries and bonuses when other government workers were not.
The trio had filed a constitutional challenge against the law they were being charged with following their release on bail at the magistrate’s court. Yesterday, Taona Nyamakura and Mzo Mbuyisa of Mtetwa and Nyambirai Legal Practitioners, submitted that the State had chosen not to contest the journalists’ appeal at the Constitutional Court and that the charges will be done on July 18 this year.
