Speaker of Parliament denies belonging to any faction

Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda has denied that he is involved in the factional politics of Zanu PF. There has been speculation that Mudenda is aligned to Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Team Lacoste Faction. Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, Mudenda said:

Factions! I don’t know who assessed me. When you are a presiding officer you are not guided by that at all. We have to be neutral

That is why we two here (him and senate president Edna Madzongwe) don’t even attend the political caucuses so that we are not influenced by what the political parties are thinking about on what to debate.

Secondly, we are not Members of Parliament. We don’t have constituencies; so, we remain in neutral gear. What you have heard are perceptions

Those factions exist in the political context, outside there. What I cannot hide is that my speakership was sponsored by the ruling party, and I belong there.
