ZESN supports ZEC's decision to select Chinese firm to supply BVR kits, gives advice to opposition parties

In a recent interview with NewsDay, Zimbabwe Election Support Network (Zesn)’s director, Rindai Chipfunde-Vava, supported the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)’s decision to award the tender to supply biometric voter registration (BVR) kits to Chinese firm Laxton Group Limited saying that the company and the losing bidder, Dermalog Identification Systems from Germany have extensive experience supplying BVR equipment.

She also advised opposition parties who have criticised ZEC’s choice, to look into the technical aspects which have more to do with ZEC than with the supplier. Said Chipfunde-Vava:

The media should seek to establish key issues in handling and management of data, like: Who delivered the training to BVR operators? Was the training properly conducted? Technical support mechanisms: Who does the operator call when something goes wrong? How (and how quickly) will a faulty kit be replaced? What is the impact on voter registration service? Downtime? Swap repair? Adequate spares?) Is there a data recovery process in the event of kit failure?
