Teacher fired by Govt for receiving money from parents to secure places for their children

Ms Debra Mhlophe who was employed as an Early Childhood Learning (ECD) teacher at Coghlan Primary School in Bulawayo was fired last year for receiving about $400 from parents desperate to get places at the school.

A disciplinary hearing found her guilty of contravening Public Service regulations. Mhlophe however appealed at the Labour Court and listed Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr Lazarus Dokora as a respondent. However, Bulawayo Labour Court judge Justice Mercy Moya-Matshanga upheld the outcome of the disciplinary committee and ruled that there was overwhelming evidence that Mhlophe had demanded and received money from parents.

In her defence, Mhlophe said that the charges against her were fabricated by teachers who hated her.
