ZESA shuts down 3 power stations due to coal shortages

In an update on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) indicated that it has shut down three smaller power stations due to poor coal supplies. Zimbabwe’s power generation at Hwange Thermal Power Station has dropped to under a third of capacity for the same reasons.

ZPC indicated that Hwange was producing 275 Mega Watts against an installed capacity of 920 Mega Watts while Kariba Power Station was generating 567 Mega Watts against an installed capacity of 750 Mega Watts. The three stations that were closed are Munyati, Bulawayo and Harare and they were not producing anything. The stations have an installed capacity of 100 Mega Watts, 90 Mega Watts and 75 Mega Watts, respectively. Speaking to The Source ZESA Holdings spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira indicated that they were not getting enough foreign currency and coal supplies.

ZPC uses between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes of coal per day, and requires around 120,000 tonnes per month with their major supplier Makomo Resources stating that they were failing to pay for coal supplied resulting in production dropping to 60,000 tonnes a month from 200,000 tonnes.
