Simbarashe Mushava (34), Everight Ncube (50) and Jabulani Dube (41) were arrested for allegedly stealing 29 drums of bitumen worth $14 500 from Maitengwe area in Bulilima District after they were intercepted by a Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development officer Mr Warren Mavhunga, while they were transporting the drums.
The trio was denied bail aand remanded in cusstody to June 13 when they appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Mr Joshua Mawere facing theft charges. The trio was denied bail because they were likely to escape as they were facing a serious offence. The court heard that on 19 April around 7AM Ncube hired Mr Vimbai Mbavarira who drives a Benz 10 tonne truck to transport 29 by 210 litre drums of bitumen tar from Maitengwe area in Bulilima District to Bulawayo and paid $400. The trio and the driver arrived at Maitengwe Border turn off and Ncube directed Mbavarira to where the drums were hidden.
They fled from the scene when they realised that police were approaching with torches. They were intercepted by Mavhunga who had been alerted by the police. The driver stopped the truck and the trio escaped leaving the drums of tar behind.
