Driver of haulage truck which caused deaths of 31 people in Proliner crash now mentally unstable

Regis Mungwari the driver of the haulage truck which allegedly side-swiped a South Africa-bound Pro-liner bus in April is reportedly mentally unstable. This claim was made by his defence lawyer when Mungwari appeared before Mvuma resident Magistrate Mr. Tayengwa Chibanda. He is facing 31 counts of culpable homicide after 31 people died in the horror crash, while others were injured when the bus caught fire.

Mungwari’s lawyer, Mr. Passmore Mabukwa, claimed that his client had not seen a doctor since the horror crash. He asked the court to order his client to undergo a psychiatric examination to assess his mental health, as he was now hallucinating.

Said Mabukwa

My client suffered some head injuries but was not attended to and is suffering from hallucinations, his speech is incoherent. May he be examined by a medical doctor and psychiatrist according to the Mental Health Act before he can stand trial

Mr. Chibanda remanded Mangwari in custody for psychiatric evaluation.
