Tawanda Mawere (31) a police officer stationed at Mbembesi police station and Mthandazo Rick Dube (34) from the Bulawayo Fire Brigade appeared in co0urt yesterday for allegedly stealing $200 from the corpse of the late Apostle Charles Chiriseri. The two appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Sithembiso Ncube facing theft charges. The two pleaded not guilty and were remanded out of custody to Monday.
Apostle Chiriseri died along the Harare-Bulawayo highway on September 15 last year when his vehicle hit a donkey. He was travelling to Bulawayo with his wife Pastor Petunia Chiriseri who suffered serious injuries and was admitted in hospital for about a month before she was discharged.
Some of the people who passed by the scene of the accident stole various items. Pastor Pertunia Chiriseri had to issue a statement saying that there was no avenging spirit after three people who were suspected to have stolen different items from the scene of the accident all died.
According to Apostle Chiriseri’s wife, Pastor Chiriseri:
When the fire brigade came to rescue us, they removed $505 from my husband’s pocket and recorded it in their book. There were five $100 dollar notes and $5. I was surprised when my brother-in-law Bishop Colin Nyathi told me that he was only given $305 when he went to collect the money.
