Beauty Mutashu (32) appeared before magistrate Barbara Chimboza after she was arrested on allegations that she tried to smuggle 3,8kg of cocaine into the country from Brazil. She was asked not to plead and was remanded in custody after her bail application failed yesterday.
She said that the cocaine belonged to a woman named Mildred who had sent her to collect the bag from Brazil. Mutashu said that she thought the bag contained Mildred’s clothes and not cocaine. She narrated that she could not check the contents of the bag as it was sealed. In her appeal for bail, Mutashu said she has two daughters, one who is sitting for her Ordinary Level examinations this year and another in Grade Seven and that she feared that they would become prostitutes like her if she was not given the opportunity to support them. However, prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa opposed bail, saying Mutashu was a flight risk as she did not have a fixed home address.
