Elifigio Macheka, 35, of Epworth was sentenced to 4 years in prison for culpable homicide after causing the death of Shelton Tungwarara who used to be married to Macheka’s wife Chiedza Nyagomo. Macheka stuck Tungwarara with an iron bar in 2011 after the latter had visited the couple’s home to check on his ill daughter and started attacking him. Macheka fled the country when he heard that Tungwarara had passed on after a few days. He was arrested in 2014, after coming back from Mozambique.
In passing judgement High Court Judge Justice Clement Phiri said:
Accused is sentenced to six years imprisonment, of which two years are suspended. This court will not tolerate any total disregard and respect for the sanctity of life and will not hesitate to impose deterrent sentences to warn would-be perpetrators that such conduct is not tolerated
