Clever Vutete, 42, a lecturer at the Zimbabwe Open University was arrested for extorting $200 from a student. Vutete allegedly threatened to fail the student unless he was given a kickback of $200. He was granted $50 bail by Harare Magistrate Barbra Chimboza when he appeared in court. He is facing charges of criminal abuse of office and will be back in court on May 22.
According to the state, Vutete demanded $200 in order to guarantee a good grade for Onias Rusike’s dissertation, which he was supposed to be supervising. Rusike failed to pay. When Rusike submitted his final draft Vutete again demanded $150. Rusike then reported the matter to the police, who arrested Vutete after he received the trap money.
