Former Harare town clerk Tendai Mahachi arrested for $800 000 fraud

Former Harare town clerk Tendai Mahachi (61) was yesterday granted $200 bail when he appeared before Harare magistrate Josephine Sande, who remanded him to May 31. He was ordered to report once every Friday at CID Serious Fraud, surrender his passport with the clerk of court, not to interfere with State witnesses and to reside at his given address as part of bail conditions.

Mahachi is accused of  influencing the City of Harare to pay $800 000 to  Shelstein Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd after misrepresenting that it was a manufacturing and supplier of parking management equipment and software.

Using his influence Mahachi recommended that City Parking enter into a joint venture with Shelstein with full knowledge that the company was bogus. He also recommended that each partner should contribute $800 000. On October 29 2014, City Parking allegedly transferred $800 000 into Shelstein Enterprises’ ZB Bank Bindura branch account. The money was withdrawn and converted to own use.
