Chombo criticised for saying Gukurahundi is a non-issue

Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo has been criticised for saying that Gukurahundi is a non-issue when it comes to the issuing of birth certificates and other identification documents to children born during the period.

Ibhetshu likaZulu secretary-general, Mbuso Fuzwayo said his organisation was not surprised by Chombo ‘s response and said that the response is illustrative of Zanu PF’s position on the issue. Mthwakazi Republic Party spokesperson, Mbonisi Gumbo concurred with Fuzwayo’s statement while People’s Democratic Party Bulawayo organiser, Bekithemba Nyathi said the only solution to the issue was to remove Zanu-PF from power.

Zapu deputy spokesperson, Iphithule Maphosa said Chombo and Zanu-PF must man up and face the consequences of Gukurahundi. Human rights activist, Dewa Mavhinga said Chombo must not deny the direct connection between lack of birth certificates and national identity documents for people affected by Gukurahundi.
