Govt plans to make Marondera Prison an open prison for females

Appearing before the before the Women Affairs and Gender Committee chaired by Biata Nyamupinga to speak on the conditions of female prisons, Justice Ministry secretary, Virginia Mabhiza and Deputy Commissioner-General of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, Fadzai Mupfure said that there are 434 female inmates in Zimbabwe’s prisons out of 19 521 inmates.

Mabhiza said that Government is taking steps to address requirements for open prisons for females and the target is to make Marondera Prison an open prison for females. She highlighted that there are 10 pregnant inmates, seven of whom have been convicted and three are still on remand. Mabhiza also pointed out the inhumane conditions in the country’s prisons such as toilets inside prisons. She pointed out that inmates with disabilities are not covered well by prison infrastructure.
