Mabvuku & Mbare residents lose property to Harare City Council for not paying water bills

Harare City Council has started attaching property belonging to debtors in a bid to recover more than $600 million it says it is owned by residents, businesses and government departments.

A Harare City Council source told Daily News that residents in Mabvuku and Mbare had their property attached. Residents Forum coordinator, Denford Ngadziore said that Harare City Council’s employment of debt collectors does not address the reason why residents are not paying rentals. Combined Harare Residents Association said that there is no Act of Parliament that legalises what Council is doing.

Community Water Alliance programmes manager Hardlife Mudzingwa said that residents did not have knowledge regarding the issue of summons. Mudzingwa also said that some bills are being sent to residents who do not get running water.
