Former Air Zim Chief Executive seeks bail extension after High Court throws out his appeal

Peter Chikumba, the former Chief executive officer of Air Zimbabwe is seeking an extension of his bail after the High Court threw out his appeal. Chikumba is appealing against both his conviction and a seven-year jail term for swindling the airline of $10 million. Chikumba has appealed to the Supreme Court and wants his bail to be extended pending the decision of the Supreme Court. The High Court will hear his application for extension of bail tomorrow.

Chikumba’s law Advocate Thabani Mpofu accused the court of losing its senses after Justice Edith Mushore ruled that there was no valid appeal before the court. She said the grounds of appeal were not clear and specific.

Chikumba was convicted along with the airline’s former corporate secretary Grace Pfumbidzayi and jailed seven years for criminal abuse of duty under the Criminal Law (Codification Reform) Act. Pfumbidzayi is also appealing at the Supreme Court for the same relief.
