Assessors are usually non-lawyers who sit together with a judge to provide either expert advice or guidance on local practices. However, an assessor’s opinion is not binding to the judge

Requirements are as folows:
Candidates must reside in the given area
Candidates must be aged 40 and over
Candidates must have a track record of community leadership or working in a public office
Candidates must have the capacity to read and write dissenting judgments.
