Govt backtracks, says its no hurry to start $2.7 b dualisation of Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu
The government has backtracked on plans to launch the dualisation of the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu. The $2.7 billion project was supposed to have been launched last month. However, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister, Joram Gumbo, has said that the government is no rush to start the project, citing bureaucratic challenges.
Said Gumbo to the Financial Gazette:
The project cannot be rushed. A project of this magnitude involves a lot of complex processes that cannot be completed overnight.
FeedbackFor example, some of the processes involve the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, an institution with its own way of doing things. We also need to open bank accounts at the same time giving ear to our financial advisors on the proper route to take.
It is almost a year since the government entered into an agreement with a Chinese contractor to dualise the highway on a 25-year Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) model.
