South African police shoot Zimbabwean journalist

Zimbabwe born journalist Godknows Nare was shot by South African police last week near his home in Florida on the West Rand. The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Johannesburg metropolice spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said police officers were responding to reports of a hijacked car that had been seen in Florida. He said that police only fired shots after the occupants of the car opened fire. Minnaar said one person was arrested while one was killed. However IPID spokesperson Moses Dhlamini gave a different version of events. He said that contrary to reports there were no indications that the occupants of the vehicle had fired first. His family said that they heard Nare was shot by the police while he had his hands up. Before the shooting Nare had spent ten years in jail after a failed bank robbery. After his release he worked with media organisations such as SABC, Al Jazeera, eNCA, BBC and New York Times.
