Kombayi shooter denied national hero status, declared provincial hero

Kizito Chivamba the late deputy Midlands provincial chairman and MP for Chiwundura was declared a provincial hero and will be buried at the provincial heroes acre. This comes after Midlands’s request to have Chivamba declared a national hero was turned down.

Chivamba is infamous for shooting the late Gweru businessman Patrick Kombayi in the rrun upto the 1990 elections. Kombayi was challenging then Vice President Simon Muzenda for the Gweru Urban seat. Kombayi survived the shooting but sustained serious injuries and had to be treated in the United Kingdom.

Chivamba received a presidential pardon after being sentenced to 7 years in prison for attempted murder together with his accomplice Central Intelligence Organisation deputy director, Elias Kanengoni.
